USA travel guide

USA — National Parks, City Skylines & Open Roads

From the Grand Canyon to New York City, Yellowstone to New Orleans — the USA offers 50 states of extraordinary diversity.

Why Visit USA?

The United States is a continent disguised as a country. In scale and diversity — geographic, cultural, climatic — no single destination matches it. A first-time visitor must choose: the sheer density and cultural energy of New York; the technical wonder of a national park road trip through the Southwest; the live music and Creole food of New Orleans; the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Key Highlights

  • New York City — Manhattan skyline, Central Park, MoMA, and the High Line
  • Grand Canyon National Park — one of the world's great natural phenomena
  • Yellowstone — geysers, hot springs, and free-roaming bison and wolves
  • New Orleans French Quarter — jazz, Creole cuisine, and unique American culture
  • Pacific Coast Highway — Highway 1 from Big Sur to Malibu
  • Chicago Architecture River Cruise and world-class art museum
  • Maui and the Hawaiian Islands — volcanic landscapes and Pacific beaches

Best Time to Visit USA

The USA's size means timing is entirely region-dependent. The Southwest national parks are best spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) — summer heat in the Grand Canyon and Zion can be dangerous. New York is spectacular in autumn with fall foliage. National parks now require advance reservations at many popular sites.

Apr – Jun

Spring

Ideal for the Southwest and Southeast. National park wildflowers. Washington D.C. cherry blossoms in late March–April. New York warming up with outdoor events.

Jul – Aug

Peak Summer

Schools out, national parks at maximum capacity. New England and Pacific Northwest at their best. Southwest can exceed 45°C — hike early or not at all.

Sep – Nov

Autumn

Fall foliage in New England (peak late October) is world-famous. Comfortable temperatures in most of the country. Best overall timing for multi-region itineraries.

USA — Travel Budget Guide

The USA is expensive, particularly in major cities. New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have costs comparable to London or Paris. Road-tripping with camping dramatically reduces costs. Note: tipping is not optional in the USA — 18–22% on restaurant bills and services is standard.

Budget Traveller

$80–130/day

Hostel dorm or budget motel, cooking some meals, national park day passes, city metro. Road-tripping with a tent pushes this lower.

Mid-Range

$150–250/day

Mid-range hotel chain, restaurant meals (with tips), car hire, national park entry, guided tours.

Luxury

$400+/day

Boutique or luxury hotel in NYC/LA/SF, fine dining, Broadway shows, private guide in national parks, domestic first class flights.

USA Safety Overview

Moderate Risk

The USA is generally safe for tourists in mainstream travel areas. However, it is a large and diverse country — safety varies enormously by location, neighbourhood, and region. Healthcare costs without insurance are among the highest in the world, making comprehensive travel insurance essential.

  • Research neighbourhood safety before booking hotels in any major US city. Tools like Numbeo and local guides help.
  • Healthcare costs in the USA are among the highest in the world — comprehensive travel insurance with medical coverage is non-negotiable.
  • Tipping is mandatory cultural practice: 18–22% at restaurants, $2–5 per bag for hotel porters, 15–20% for taxis.
  • Carry your passport or a certified copy — ID is frequently checked for alcohol purchases.
  • National park entry now requires advance reservations at peak-season parks (Yosemite, Zion, Rocky Mountain). Book via recreation.gov.

Getting Around USA

Domestic air travel is the backbone of long-distance US travel. The country is simply too large for rail to be practical across most routes. Car hire is the default for national park visits, road trips, and anywhere outside major cities. New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. have genuinely useful metro systems.

Domestic Flights

Delta, United, American, Southwest, Spirit. Book 3–6 weeks ahead for best prices. Southwest has no change fees — useful for flexible trips.

Car Hire

Essential for the Southwest, national parks, and most destinations outside major cities. Book in advance — prices surge last-minute. Under-25 drivers pay surcharges.

Amtrak Rail

Only practical on the Northeast Corridor (Boston–NYC–Washington D.C.). Slow elsewhere but scenic — the California Zephyr and Empire Builder are bucket-list journeys.

NYC Subway

472 stations, 24/7 operation. OMNY contactless payment. Most reliable in Manhattan.

Uber / Lyft

Available in all major cities and many mid-size towns. Essential for airport transfers where public transport is limited.

USA — Connectivity & eSIM

The USA has excellent 5G coverage in cities and good 4G coverage across most of the country. However, rural areas — including large sections of national parks and the Southwest desert — have limited or no coverage. Verizon has the broadest rural coverage. International visitors need either a US SIM or a travel eSIM — home plan roaming costs in the USA can be very high.
