UAE travel guide

UAE — The Desert Future

Skyscrapers rising from the sand, world-record attractions, luxury shopping, and an ancient Bedouin culture underneath it all.

Why Visit UAE?

The UAE has built one of the world's most ambitious tourism ecosystems from near-scratch in under 40 years. Dubai is the epicentre — Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Mall, the world's most trafficked international airport. Abu Dhabi offers a more cultured pace: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Formula 1 at Yas Marina Circuit. For all its modernity, the UAE also offers genuine desert wilderness — Liwa Oasis, Hatta Mountain, and traditional dhow cruises on Dubai Creek.

Key Highlights

  • Burj Khalifa observation decks (At The Top) and Dubai Downtown
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi — one of the world's most stunning
  • Dubai Desert Safari — dune bashing, camel riding, and Bedouin camp dinner
  • Gold Souk and Spice Souk in old Dubai (Deira)
  • Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis resort
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi — art spanning 5,000 years of world civilisation

Best Time to Visit UAE

The UAE has an extreme desert climate. The comfortable visiting window is November to April, when temperatures range from 20–30°C. May to October sees temperatures routinely above 40°C with high humidity, making outdoor activity difficult. However, massive hotel discounts (40–60% off) make summer the budget season for indoor attractions.

Nov – Feb

Peak Season

Perfect weather for outdoor Dubai and desert safaris. 22–28°C. Dubai Shopping Festival and New Year events make this the busiest and most expensive period.

Mar – Apr

Shoulder Season

Still comfortable at 25–35°C. Slightly fewer crowds after the main tourist rush. Good balance of weather and value.

UAE — Travel Budget Guide

The UAE has a broad cost spectrum. Dubai's luxury segment is world-class. However, genuine budget travel is possible: Dubai's excellent metro, budget hotels in Bur Dubai and Deira, and the growing street food scene allow travel on under $100/day. Alcohol is expensive and only available in licensed hotel bars and restaurants.

UAE Safety Overview

Low Risk

The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world — violent crime is extremely low and the rule of law is strictly enforced. Women travelling solo are safer here than in most global cities. However, UAE law differs significantly from Western norms — what is legal at home may not be legal here.

  • Respect dress codes: cover shoulders and knees in malls, souks, and non-beach public areas.
  • Alcohol is only permitted in licensed hotel bars and restaurants. Public intoxication is illegal.
  • Photography restrictions: never photograph government buildings, military installations, or individuals without consent.
  • Ramadan: eating, drinking, and smoking in public between sunrise and sunset is illegal during the holy month.
  • Many medications legal elsewhere are controlled substances in the UAE — check the Ministry of Health list before travel.

Getting Around UAE

Dubai has one of the most modern public transport systems in the Middle East. The Dubai Metro (Red and Green Lines) covers all major tourist zones from the airport to the Marina. Uber and Careem are widely used and affordable. Inter-emirate transport is primarily by car — taxis connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 90 minutes.

Dubai Metro

Red Line covers airport, DIFC, downtown, and Marina. Green Line covers Deira souks. NOL card for tap-and-go travel from AED 5.8/journey.

Uber / Careem

Reliable, metered, and air-conditioned. Airport to Downtown Dubai ~AED 55–70.

Abu Dhabi–Dubai Bus (E100/E101)

Frequent bus connection between Dubai and Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. AED 25 each way, ~2 hours.

Water Taxi / Abra

Traditional wooden abra boats cross Dubai Creek for AED 1. Water taxis connect JBR and Dubai Marina.

Car Hire

Essential for Abu Dhabi beyond the centre, and for accessing Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and the Hatta highlands.

UAE — Connectivity & eSIM

The UAE has world-class 5G coverage from Etisalat (e&) and du throughout all emirates. Internet speeds are among the highest globally. Note: VoIP services including WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and Skype are blocked under UAE telecoms regulation. A tourist SIM from Etisalat or du at the airport provides immediate data access.
