Spain — Fiestas, Architecture & the Mediterranean Coast

Gaudí's Barcelona, Flamenco in Seville, tapas in Granada, and beaches stretching from Ibiza to the Costa del Sol.

Why Visit Spain?

Spain is arguably Europe's most complete travel destination — world-class art and architecture, extraordinary regional food cultures, vibrant nightlife, warm Mediterranean coastlines, and a deeply festive spirit. Every region feels distinct: Catalonia's modernisme architecture, Andalusia's Moorish heritage, the Basque Country's pintxos bar culture, and the desert plateau of Castile.

Key Highlights

  • Gaudí's Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló in Barcelona
  • Alhambra palace and Generalife gardens in Granada
  • Prado Museum and Reina Sofía gallery in Madrid
  • Flamenco performance in Seville's Santa Cruz district
  • San Sebastián pintxos bars — highest Michelin-star density in Europe
  • Running of the Bulls at Pamplona's Sanfermines festival

Best Time to Visit Spain

Spain's geography creates very different travel conditions by region. Madrid and the interior are brutally hot in summer (40°C+). The northern coast is cool and wet year-round. The Mediterranean and Andalusia are best April–June and September–October. The Canary Islands offer mild 22–24°C weather year-round.

Apr – Jun

Spring

Best overall time for cities and Andalusia. Seville's April Fair (Feria de Abril) and Córdoba's Patios Festival. Warm days, cool evenings, fewer crowds than summer.

Jul – Aug

Peak Summer

Mediterranean coast at full capacity. Inland cities reach 38–42°C. Best for beach holidays and summer festivals. Book everything in advance.

Sep – Oct

Autumn

Ideal conditions throughout Spain. Sea still warm. Harvest festivals in La Rioja wine region. Cities cool to comfortable. Best value of the year.

Spain — Travel Budget Guide

Spain is mid-range by Western European standards but excellent value compared to France, UK, or Scandinavia. Tapas culture means eating well is cheap — many bars serve free tapas with drinks in Granada and Almería. The AVE rail is fast and affordable with advance booking.

Budget Traveller

Hostel dorm, free tapas culture, Cercanías commuter trains, free museum days (Prado free from 6pm), packed lunches from supermarkets.

Mid-Range

€100–160/day

Private hotel or pensión, restaurant meals, AVE rail tickets, guided tours, and entry to major attractions like the Alhambra.

Luxury

€300+/day

Paradores (historic castle hotels), Michelin-starred dining in San Sebastián, private Flamenco shows, VIP beach clubs in Ibiza.

Spain Safety Overview

Low Risk

Spain is a very safe destination. The main risk for tourists is petty theft — pickpocketing on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, the Barcelona metro, and Madrid's Sol metro station. Violent crime against tourists is very low. Scooter bag-snatching has increased in Barcelona city centre.

  • Las Ramblas in Barcelona: keep valuables in a front money belt or inside jacket pocket. Distraction theft is common.
  • Be wary of "friendship bracelet" sellers who forcibly tie bracelets on your wrist then demand payment.
  • Barcelona beach: don't leave valuables unattended on the sand, even for a moment.
  • Healthcare: EU EHIC/GHIC gives access to public healthcare. Non-EU visitors need comprehensive travel insurance.

Getting Around Spain

Spain's AVE high-speed rail network connects Madrid to Barcelona (2h30), Seville (2h30), Valencia (1h40), and other cities at speeds up to 310km/h. Barcelona and Madrid have excellent metro systems. Low-cost airlines (Vueling, Iberia Express) are competitive for routes not well served by AVE.

AVE High-Speed Rail

Madrid hub connects to Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Málaga, and Zaragoza. Book via Renfe.com. Advance tickets from €25.

Barcelona Metro

12 lines, runs until 2am (5am Fri–Sat). T-Casual 10-trip card offers best value for multi-day visits.

Madrid Metro

Europe's 2nd largest network. 13 lines plus suburban Cercanías. Direct line to Barajas Airport.

Domestic Flights

Vueling and Iberia Express connect mainland cities and Canary/Balearic Islands. Competitive with rail for Barcelona–Seville.

Car Hire

Essential for rural Andalusia, the Pyrenees, and Galicia's coastal roads. Autopistas (toll motorways) are fast; secondary roads scenic.

Spain — Connectivity & eSIM

Spain has excellent 4G and 5G coverage through Movistar, Vodafone ES, and Orange. EU visitors roam on home plans at no extra charge. Non-EU visitors (including UK post-Brexit) should pick up a local SIM on arrival or use a travel eSIM. Coverage in rural Extremadura and parts of inland Castile can be patchy.
