Greece travel guide

Greece — Islands, History & the Blue Aegean

Whitewashed cliff villages, turquoise waters, 5,000 years of civilisation, and the world's best mezze.

Why Visit Greece?

Greece is the original travel destination. The islands offer over 200 inhabited options, each with its own character — from the party energy of Mykonos to the wild, off-grid beauty of Ikaria. The mainland provides Ancient Athens, the Peloponnese battlefields, and the Byzantine monasteries of Meteora. The food — mezze, fresh seafood, feta, horiatiki salad — is central to Greek life and available at any budget.

Key Highlights

  • Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens
  • Santorini caldera sunsets from Oia
  • Ferry-hopping the Cyclades islands
  • Ancient Delphi and the Oracle sanctuary
  • Meteora's Byzantine monasteries atop rock pillars
  • Snorkelling the Blue Caves of Zakynthos
  • Heraklion and the Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete

Best Time to Visit Greece

The Greek islands are at their best May–June and September–October. High summer (July–August) is blazing hot, extremely crowded in Santorini and Mykonos, and prices peak. Shoulder season offers warm water, long days, and significantly fewer tourists. Athens is accessible year-round.

May – Jun

Best Shoulder Season

Warm, sunny, and less crowded than August. Water reaches swimming temperatures from late May. Excellent for hiking and exploring. Best value for accommodation.

Jul – Aug

Peak Summer

35°C+ heat on the islands. Santorini and Mykonos extremely crowded. Best beach conditions but plan accommodation far in advance.

Sep – Oct

Golden Autumn

Ideal for many travellers — warm sea (24°C+), crowds thinning, October prices dropping sharply. Best combination of weather and value.

Greece — Travel Budget Guide

Greece spans a wide budget range. Athens is affordable by Western European standards. Mykonos and Santorini are among Europe's most expensive, while lesser-known islands like Naxos, Paros, and Milos offer excellent value. The biggest variable is accommodation.

Budget Traveller

€50–80/day

Hostel dorm or budget room, taverna meals, local buses, free beaches. Feasible on most islands except Mykonos and Santorini.

Mid-Range

€100–180/day

Private hotel room, restaurant meals, ferry travel, guided day trips, and entry to key archaeological sites.

Luxury

€350+/day

Cliffside infinity-pool suite in Santorini or Mykonos, private sailing charter, fine dining, VIP beach clubs.

Greece Safety Overview

Low Risk

Greece is a safe destination. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Athens city centre has pockets of petty theft around Omonia Square and on the metro. Island safety issues are predominantly related to sea conditions — strong Meltemi winds in the Aegean July–August can be hazardous.

  • The Meltemi wind (July–August) can create rough sea conditions in the Cyclades — check ferry status before booking.
  • Pickpocketing is the main urban risk, particularly on Athens metro Line 1 and in Monastiraki.
  • Driving on Greek islands: roads are narrow and winding — hire motorbikes with care and always wear a helmet.
  • Tap water quality varies by island — bottled water is recommended on smaller Cyclades islands.
  • Summer heatwaves are serious: carry water, avoid midday sun, and apply high-factor SPF.

Getting Around Greece

Ferry travel between the Greek islands is one of the great travel experiences. Blue Star, Hellenic Seaways, and SeaJets connect most islands with daily sailings. Fast ferries between Athens (Piraeus) and Santorini take 5 hours; conventional ferries take 8. Domestic flights on Aegean Airlines and Sky Express cover the major islands in under an hour.

Ferries

The backbone of Greek island travel. Book via Ferryhopper or Openseas. Blue Star Ferries for overnight sailings; SeaJets for fast catamaran connections.

Domestic Flights

Aegean Airlines and Sky Express connect Athens to Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Corfu, Heraklion, and more. Book ahead — routes fill in summer.

Athens Metro

Lines 1, 2, and 3. Clean and air-conditioned. Line 3 runs direct to Athens International Airport.

KTEL Buses

National bus network connecting mainland cities and the Peloponnese. Good coverage, very affordable.

Car Hire

Essential for exploring Crete, Rhodes, and the Peloponnese properly. Book early in peak season.

Greece — Connectivity & eSIM

Greece has solid 4G coverage on all major islands and across the mainland. Remote smaller islands can have patchy coverage. EU travellers benefit from roam-like-home data. Non-EU visitors should use a travel eSIM or pick up a local SIM from Cosmote, Vodafone GR, or WIND.
